    I think he wants his parents to give him another chance by showing them how good he could be.

      I agree, he thinks that if he's on his best behavior, his parents might think he had changed his ways, and might not have to stay in Alabama.

    Because he could be thinking that if he shows that he can be a good boy, and have manners, their parents might decide not to make him stay there for a long time. And that he might be afraid of Grandma Sands

    I think Byron acted better because if he acted on his best behavior, Grandma Sands might've told his parents that he was a good boy and didn't have to stay in Alabama for the summer.
