On another note, in class we discussed some background information about the Civil Rights Movement. One of the points we discussed was the church bombing that occurred and influenced the writing of "The Ballad of Birmingham" which in turn influenced Christopher Paul Curtis to write the book. I am answering question #2 (how I would have responded) When I would hear about the bombing, I would first feel shocked and then sad that the girls died.
ReplyDeleteAfter the arrest, I would want to sit in the court and listen to why Richard Chambliss bombed the church and did he know that 4 girls died. I would be disappointed at the judge for giving Richard Chambliss a $100 fine and 6 months in jail for having dynamite, but not sending him to prison for killing the girls.
I would protest, like Martin Luther King Jr. did. I would hold signs, and let people know that this wasn't right. The girls did nothing wrong, but died because they went to church.
